Your resume is your first foot in the door. It’s basically one document that tells the recruiter if you’re worth it or not. Here are some tips on creating a resume that stands out.

#1. Contextualize your experience.

So you’ve worked with company A, B & C. Apparently, company A is actually the larger producer of garri in Nigeria. That’s great, but not everyone knows that. Your recruiter isn’t going to look up each company on your resume to see how popular/not they are, so include relevant context to better position you and your experience in your resume.

#2. Where are your keywords?

Most companies and recruiters use keywords to identify qualified candidates. If you don’t use the keywords that are relevant to your industry and role, your application may be automatically overlooked by the electronic applicant tracking systems.

#3. Cut the fat. Write lean and mean.

Yes, it’s tempting to describe in great detail all the different things you did in various companies and end up with a 3-page resume. Don’t 👏🏾 Do 👏🏾 It.
Half the time, your recruiter will only skim through, so write short and sweet. Use numbers and percentages to describe your accomplishments and keep only the key details.

#4. Minimalism always wins.

A well-designed and formatted document will always move something in the reader, whether it’s an article or your resume. Use white space and keep the colours minimal and beautiful. Make sure your font is consistent and your text is formatted properly.

Bonus tip: If there’s a typo in your resume in 2020, can we just say that you’re not actually ready to find a job? Check and double-check, in fact, triple-check that you don’t have any spelling errors in your resume.

That’s it! Good luck with your job search. We’re rooting for you! 🧡
