The year is 2022. Just as marketers are wrapping up the year and planning for the next, then boom: ChatGPT launches!

The chaos starts. Content marketers are frantic with worry that ChatGPT may take their jobs, and LinkedIn posts about it fill every feed. Many a “thought leader” had one or two things to say about this revolutionary invention.

Fast forward to 2025, the story has changed and what was once seen as a threat is now a powerful tool many marketers embrace for day-to-day work. From performing tasks like research, content outlining, content repurposing, and heck, writing, AI has become an essential tool for many marketers.

The best AI tools for research and writing

Research and writing are the backbone of marketing—from audience research and content creation to video research, scripting, and more.

Here are AI tools to get you started with that.

1. ChatGPT

Source: ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a powerful tool that helps you perform any research, from audience and keyword analysis to content strategy development and idea generation. It also assists with writing tasks such as content creation, copywriting, title generation, and meta-description writing.

Using a conversation-like structure, ChatGPT punches out answers based on your prompts and can give detailed answers depending on how specific your prompt is and your history with the tool.

Vera Andeubenye Agiang, an AI and Automation Specialist, says:

A prompt to ChatGPT to help her improve the introduction of an article.

Response from ChatGPT based on the prompt.

Vera adds, “When writing about tools, I first ask ChatGPT about the tools and then fact-check the answers later by using those tools. This gives me comprehensive information on what I’m working on and to get work done faster.”

Kiro Nowak-Smith also finds ChatGPT useful for brief creation and question generation. Here's what she shared:

Jeremiah Ajayi also mentioned how he uses ChatGPT to boost efficiency as a marketing leader.

  • Multiple language options, expanding its usefulness to a large audience.

  • Its “explore GPTs” feature allows you to perform different tasks from CV writing to website building, summarization, image generation, data analysis, etc.

  • Its versatility enables it to create any form of content from social media, blog posts, email content, etc.

Pricing

  • GPT- 3.5 version - Free

  • GPT- 4 Model with ChatGPT Plus - $20/month.

2. Perplexity

Source: Perplexity

I used Perplexity for 30% of the research for this article and it was so helpful. With a single prompt, it gave me a breakdown of the tools I was researching. I only had to do a quick confirmation from the tool’s website to verify the information I had. This cut my research time in half.

Perplexity is another generative AI with superpowers in research, and content writing, among other things. A distinct feature is how it links to sources and includes citations and references, making its content more reliable and verifiable.

It also allows you to tailor your search based on the research you want to do, such as academic research, SEO content research, etc.

Here’s what Darakshan Anjum, a content writer, had to say when she compared Perplexity and ChatGPT.

How to use AI to grow as a marketer

I used AI for 30% of my research for this article, and it helped me work faster. This is why AI exists—to be used as a tool to do better and faster work and not as a crutch you rely on while neglecting your human creativity.

Your ability to give great prompts can help you get the best from generative AI tools. Consider these two prompts:

  • Prompt 1: Give me ten content ideas for a fashion business

  • Prompt 2: Give me ten social media content ideas for Instagram reels for a fashion business targeting customers between the ages of 18 and 30, living in Nigeria. The content ideas should be categorized based on where they apply in the sales funnel, in a tabular format, and should be simple for a 13-year-old to understand. Impersonate the content strategist at Zara, and the tone should be casual.

These were the results I got from ChatGPT for both prompts.

Result from prompt 1

Result from prompt 2

Did you spot the difference? That’s the power of strategic prompting!

Here are five ways to refine your prompts, according to Michael Olaye, the EVP and Managing Director at Hero Digital in the SEMRush AI-powered marketer course.

  • Details: Add extra details to your prompt, such as the target audience, search intent, where the content will be used, etc.

  • Impersonation: Tell the AI to impersonate a person or brand. This gives an extra layer of information that produces more niched responses. You can say something like “You are a marketer for a small business in Nigeria," “You are the marketing head at Zara," and so on.

  • Format: Include the format you want the content to appear in, be it tabular form, bulleted guide, etc.

  • Tone: Include details on the tone you want the content to mimic, according to your brand’s writing style.

  • Give examples: Providing these also helps the AI tool get the specific thing you need and come up with similar answers.

AI can do a lot for you as a marketer; however, it needs your human creativity and feedback to give the best responses. So, AI is not here to take your job; it’s here to improve it. Use it!
